Interview!
For my interview i asked my buddy Jay Schuster a couple of questions, I asked him because he has been bowfishing for 5 years now if not longer, and he has all the nicest and most high end equiptment. So here they are:
Question 1: What is Bowfishing?
Answer 1: Bowfishing is recreational sport that uses a hunting bow and a fishing type reel with the line attached to the arrow of the bow.
Question 2: Why do you bowfish?
Answer 2: I bowfish because it helps control the Carp population and it give me a huge adrenaline rush and is something to do while hunting season is out.
Question 3: When is the best time to bowfish?
Answer 3: Out of all the times and places i have been out I personally think the best time to go is in the night because fish come up into the shallows because that is where the warm water is and they all mostly sleep on their side.
Question 4: Who do you usually go with?
Answer 4: Just good friends, not that many people i know bowfish.
Question 5: Where do you go?
Answer 5: Secret lakes usually and In riverbays.
Question 6: Whats the most you have gotten in one night?
Answer 6: Id have to say we filled 2 55gallon drums which is about 110 fish.
Question 7: What is the worst you have done?
Answer 7: There have been times i have went to creeks in the daytime and not seen a single thing.
Question 8: What do you do with the fish?
Answer 8: I usually dump them in a river, but some people will grind them up and put them in a garnden for fertalizer.
Question 9: What kind of fish can you shoot?
Answer 9: Any Rough fish, which is carp, gar, catfish, suckers, dogfish and basically any bottom feeders.
Question 10: Out of your years bowfihing, how many fish do you think you have shot?
Answer 10: Id have to say over 3000.

Secret lakes
Since it is past the second weekend into May, the carp have been turning up all over Muzzy and AMS facebook sites, i say this because they get at least 3 pictures a night from bowfishing from Minnesota. Most of which were an hours drive from the the Metro area. But they did ok, now when i looked deeper into the pictures by doing a little facebook creeping and i have found a group of guys that have filled there 55 gallon drum all 5 times they have been out so far! And they names there pictures 'Secret Lake' so carp are out there you just gotta find the right place and time to nail them!
Carp not so shallow!
The MN DNR came out with an announcement to all bowfishers that the carp are still not going to the warm shallows! What they mean by that is this: Carp stay in deeper water in the daytime to avoid preditors and other things, But in the night time they move into the shallow water to rest or sleep because it is warmer in the shallow water (they usually move so their top fin is sticking out of the water about half inch on a calm night and night weather conditions). BUT because of all this Minnesota cold weather the carp are no where near the shallow water, which means no one can see the carp at night and if they do they are to deep to shoot. The DNR estimated that by the 3rd weekend in May all carp should have moved to the shallows at night making shooting alot better and simpler.
Flooded Fields bowfishing opener
As most of you know Bowfishing opener is long gone and over, it was May 1st. We went on the Mississippi river in Clearwater and expected to do very well, Well to our surprise it was terrible.... i say this because we were out till 4am in the freezing cold(32 degrees) with gusts of wind up to 30 mph. We went into the shallows where we expected to see alot of carp. And to our surprise got only about 20 shots off each the entire night! We got a total of 5 carp on out boat with the biggest weighing only 12lbs. The river was very high that night and we were mostly in flooded fields and parks or up in the low ground with the trees. I expected a good night and all i got was sick for 4 days. Lets get this weather warmed up Minnesota.

Bowfishing opener!
Bow fishing is 5 days 10 hours and 25 minutes away! What are you gonna do? Well prolly nothing but at midnight on April 30th-May 1st I will be on the river shootin carp, that is however a sunday so it will be hard not to sleep. Hopefully we limit out on that night/morning. I will post pictures of how many we get.
Arrows
This weekend I picked up two blank arrows, they only come with a nock and are tapped and drilled with no slides or tips. They are quite simple to set up and a cheaper solution. They are AMS arrows.

New Reel
I got the brand new retriever pro bowfishing reel made by AMS. It was a spendy item(about 80) from fleet farm where it was the cheapest out of everywhere i checked. This new reel comes with a arrow holder and has a grip to slip over the reel trigger so the line wont wrap around it. It also has new orange 200lb braided line. I put it on my bow this weekend and had to strip it all down, nothing to exciting about it though. Now just need arrows and tims and rest.

Video Ideas
For my video i plan to take it of me and my buddies on opener which is may 1st but we cant anymore because of the rules of this class say the video needs to be in by the 13th of this month. So now the plan is to take a video of my setup and maybe some practice shots into the river, or i could just illegally bowfish which is perfectly fine with me because ill just tell them its for a class in school. Let me know what you think i should do.
Poll Question
Answer my poll question! I wanna know what kinda bow YOU have, if you dont have one then name one a relative has or the one you have heard of the most!
Friday, April 1, 2011
This video is taken in a river in Illinois, this year i will have the chance to go there and bowfish this area because i have relatives that live very close to this area, the fish are known to jumb out of the water because of vibrations the boat makes.

Boats
Bowfishing boats, any boat can be a bowfishing boat but to have the best luck in seeing fish and getting a shot at a fish is to have a platform. Alot of people i know make their own platforms out of Aluminum/Metal/Wood and other sturdy materials. With 'Muzzy' and 'PSE' brands, they have all Professional made boats with platforms. Here are some examples
This is a V-front jonboat with a homemade aluminum platform |
Some people will use anything to bowfish even a canoe! |
This is a Sponsors boat, you can see it is outfitted for bowfishing |
When bowfishing a 'Jonboat' would be the best to use because they are flatbottom and can go into shallower waters opposed to a boat with a Hull thats made of fiberglass that could crack when hitting a rock. It would also work alot better to make a platform on a jonboar because it would be alot more sturdy. There are plenty of arguments about the Hull boats opposed to a Jonboat but my personal preference is a Jonboat because it can be taken down the river without being tipped easily and i have been in a V-hull boat with a platform on the river and wouldnt you know it, the boat tipped throwing 2 bows, my buddy Jake, and a generator in the water which we all got back because of how shallow it was. So if you ever think of going bowfishing or buying a boat for it. Consider the more expensive but wiser choice 'Jonboat'.

Retriever Pro bowfishing reel Vs Zebco 808:
The retriver pro is the best reel out there and was put to the test by the Zebro co. back in 2008 when they set up a 'fishing' style of reel whih didnt go far when folks found out that there was even some kind of 'drag' on the reel and it kept siezing up on consumers which cause alot of returns and product loss. It is still standing and my guess is it always will with 5 star ratings all over the internet, Retriever pro. This company has had many sucesses and with the high ratings wont be beat anytime soon. So if you feel like going bowfishing, brand name does matter. Spend the money and fish smart.
